Oak Wood Flooring Grading

This page gives you a better understanding of the different types of grading with our products, from Prime Grade and Classic to the more knotty boards like Antique.

Prime Grading

Prime Grade – A/B Grading Oak Engineered Wood Flooring                                                    

Prime Grade, also mainly called A/B Grade, has many other names depending on the manufacturer and supplier of the wood flooring.

Other names can be Select Grade, which is the cleanest grade, or 1 BIZ.

Prime Grade Wood Flooring is a mix of A and B grades.

A – without knots and sapwood, uniform colour, sometimes small knots up to max 2mm allowed.

B – with knots up to max 2-4mm, no sapwood, harmonic-natural colour.

Classic Grade

Classic Grade – B C D with some A Grade Oak Engineered Wood Flooring

Classic Grade, also mainly called AB/CD Grade, has many other names depending on the manufacturer and supplier of the wood flooring.

Other names can be Nature Grade and Character.

Classic Grade consists of BC and D grades with some A grade.

A – without knots and sapwood, uniform colour, sometimes small knots up to max 2mm allowed.

B – with knots up to max 2-4mm, no sapwood, harmonic-natural colour.

C – with knots up to max 6 cm, sapwood max 15%, natural colour.

D – with knots up to 8cm, and max 30% sapwood, allow a wide.

Country Grade

Country Grade – C D E Grades Oak Engineered Wood Flooring

Country Grade also mainly called CD/E Grade has many other names depending on the manufacturer and supplier of the wood flooring.

Other names can be Rustic grade and sometimes called tavern grade.

Country Grade consists of CD and E grades

C – with knots up to max 6 cm, sapwood max 15%, natural colour.

D – with knots up to 8cm, and max 30% sapwood, allow a wide range of colour variation.

E – with knots up to 10cm, allow cracks up to 30cm in the middle of the boards (max.5mm wide) and end cracks max.25cm (max 8mm wide), allow a wider range of colour variation.

Antique Distressed

Antique Grade – CD and E Grades Oak Engineered Wood Flooring

Antique Grade also mainly called CD/E Grade has many other names depending on the manufacturer and supplier of the wood flooring. Other names can be Distressed or Barn Boards.

This board has been heavily brushed and distressed. Can have large cracks filled with black filler and concave-filled knotts.

Some of our antique boards can be band-sawn sawn, cut across the board multiple times but this treatment is extra and would be described in the product description as a Cross-sawn.

Antique Grade consists of CD and E grades

C – with knots up to max.6 cm, sapwood max 15%, natural colour .

D – with knots up to 8cm, and max.30% sapwood, allow a wide range of colour variation .

E – with knots up to 10cm, allow cracks up to 30cm in the middle of the boards (max 5mm wide) and end cracks max 25cm (max 8mm wide), allows a wider range of colour variation.
